The rotator cuff is the tendons and muscles that surround the shoulder joint. It provides the total range of motion to the shoulder. When pain occurs in the shoulder, sometimes it is due to rotator cuff tears. Most tears occur in the dominant arm and is found most often in men over the age of 40. Rotator cuff symptoms include -

· Pain and weakness in the shoulder – Doing small things like combing your hair, reaching overhead or tucking in a shirt can become difficult if a tear occurs. Sleeping can become difficult.

· With rotator cuff symptoms, the pain will occur on the side and front of the upper arm and shoulder, making it hard to sleep on that side at times. The pain can vary from being uncomfortable with use to being extreme pain that is continuous. Most times, lifting the arm above the shoulder will be painful. When there is little damage, pain can be relieved by resting the arm…

Pain during and after activity can indicate moderate damage. Pain can also be present at night when trying to sleep on the affected shoulder. Severe damage is indicated when there is continuous pain. This can affect how much the arm is used. Limited use will result in stiffness and weakness of the shoulder and arm.

Rotator cuff symptoms include tendonitis. This is an inflammation of the tendon. When using the shoulder and arm, pain can radiate down the outside of the arm to the elbow. Moving the arm to the side or in a forward motion can worsen the pain.

When there is continuous pain, it is often due to small tendon tears. Rotator cuff tears are indicated when moving the arm causes pain, especially with resistance. A severe tear can cause a popping sound or tearing sensation in the shoulder area. Bruising can occur.
