Frozen shoulder is a condition of pain and stiffness in shoulder joint. It is also known as adhesive capsulitis and is characterized by restraint in motion of shoulder joint. If one doesn’t undergo treatment at an initial stage, the condition may worsen by noticeably reducing the range of motion. More often, at one particular time, one shoulder is affected by frozen shoulder. However, some people may develop this in another shoulder after some time.

There is no specific reason behind the occurrence of frozen shoulder. It might occur due to distressing injury to the shoulder or for any other un-specified reasons. Some of the factors that lead to frozen shoulder are stated below…

Disorders:
Patients with endocrine disorders such as thyroid problems and diabetes are quite prone to frozen shoulder.

Demographical factors:
Frozen shoulder is found more in women than in men. It mostly affects the age group of 40 to 60 years.

Surgery:
Patients who have undergone shoulder surgery are prone to frozen shoulder. If prolonged joint immobilization follows the surgery or injury, then there is a greater chance of developing this symptom.

Other reasons:
Other reasons like Parkinson’s disease and heart disease may also lead to frozen shoulder.

Though there are so many reasons, it’s very difficult to determine why frozen shoulder is developed in some people. The shoulder joint becomes scarred and stiff due to some or the other above mentioned factors. Usually, there is more movement in shoulder joint then in any other joints. But when one develops a frozen shoulder, the capsule surrounding the joints contract, resulting in scar tissue known as adhesions. This results in stiff joint and makes the movement painful.

To prevent developing this problem, a familiar commendation is to move the shoulder joint properly. A little exercise of shoulder can do wonders in preventing frozen shoulder.
