Rotator cuff is a group of muscles and muscle tendons that keep the shoulder and arms together. Rotator cuff tears are common in athletes, workers, and aged people that make frequent use of the arms and the shoulders. A rotator cuff tear is actually the tear of the rotator cuff tendon.

When the tear is not severe and isn’t spread over the entire tendon it’s termed as partial rotator cuff tear. This is opposed to full thickness rotator cuff tear where the tear is pronounced and is treated with surgery…

Partial rotator cuff tear may not require surgery in most cases. They can be treated with anti inflammatory medications, cortisone injections, and physical therapy. Many people with small partial rotator cuff tears do well with rest and medication. Ice and heat packs may be administered to the damaged site. Physical therapy sessions will last for 6-8 weeks to correct partial rotator cuff tear problems.

If the problem still persists after these methods of treatment surgery is resorted to as the last option. Even when surgery is resorted to set right partial rotator cuff tear, repair is not performed if the tear is less than 50% of the rotator cuff tendon. Only removing the frayed and damaged part of the tendons serves the purpose. Inflamed bursa also may be removed to relieve the symptoms.

Chances of repairing a partial rotator cuff tear are very strong as the damage is limited only to a part of the tendon. Physical therapy should be continued even when medication gives immediate relief. Physical therapy completes the treatment for partial rotator cuff tear repair. Rotator cuff MRI is effective in detecting full thickness tears but not with partial tears. Partial rotator cuff tears may be clearly detected by magnetic resonance anthography. Partial tears can be seen and operated with the help of atrthroscope.
