There are many treatments available to aid in reducing the symptoms of frozen shoulder; however, most of these treatments are only effective in eliminating or reducing the amount of pain that the patient suffers as a result of this condition.
Physical therapy for frozen shoulder is a controversial subject because many feel that it, unnecessarily, causes the patient more discomfort than they really need to endure. Those who feel this way are firm believers that a frozen shoulder will heal itself, given the right amount of time and patience…
For those who do not subscribe to this belief, there are some forms of physical therapy for frozen shoulder that may be beneficial in relieving the stiffness, and the pain caused by it. Most of the time, physical therapy consists of stretching exercises and massages.
The exercises are very limited and usually only done with the help of a licensed physical therapist as there is significant danger of doing real damage to the shoulder joint if the exercises are not performed correctly and carefully. Massages may be both manual, in the form of massage or chiropractic manipulation, and deep heat, usually through ultrasound.
One thing to keep in mind is this: physical therapy for frozen shoulder can be very useful in relieving both stiffness and pain, but…it can usually only be done effectively during the first and last stages of the condition. These stages are called the freezing and thawing stages. During these stages, there is generally still some flexibility remaining in the shoulder joint, which allows the patient some range of motion to work with in therapy.
The second stage is called the frozen stage and any attempt at stretching or extreme movement during this stage can be excruciatingly painful for the patient and is generally not deemed worth the suffering it can cause.
