Rotator cuff tendons often become enflamed. This inflammation can result in serious pain and can be caused by many different factors. These factors include aging, abuse or overuse. Injury can also occur if a bad fall is taken and you catch yourself with your hand when you land.

Any action which requires repeated overhead motion or a lot of heavy lifting, including athletics, can put severe strain on the tendons and muscles in the shoulder area. Degeneration due to aging is normal. Any of the above circumstances and conditions can lead to a tear and the need for rotator cuff treatment…

Indications of a rotator cuff injury include pain in the top and outer part of the shoulder. This pain will increase significantly and, sometime, almost unbearably, when you lift your arm up over your head or when you push it out to extend it sideways from your body. This pain will make most normal, everyday activities such as getting dressed or combing your hair very difficult.

Popping or clicking in the shoulder joint is not uncommon. Weakness will result due to the pain when lifting the arm and if you are not careful to keep moving the arm, a condition called frozen shoulder may occur due to stiffness in the joint.

Rotator cuff treatment may vary based on the patient’s age, health, and mobility needs. Rest, ice, heat, and anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen and aspirin may help to relieve the symptoms and will normally be the physician’s first recommendation.

Another recommendation may be a course of physical therapy, exercises done to improve strength and restore movement to the arm and shoulder. Deep heat ultrasound treatments and cortisone injections are another possibility. If these forms of rotator cuff treatment are not successful, your physician will probably recommend surgery to repair the damaged tendons.
